Trudeau confirms that the government is not considering removing Her Majesty from the oath of citizenship.

Mr. Speaker, I can confirm that we are not considering removing Her Majesty from the oath of citizenship.

Mr. Speaker, I was in Vancouver a few weeks ago to speak with young people about the fact that we are supporting renters with greater protections and by making sure that the money they spend every month on rent actually gets counted in their credit scores to help them get a mortgage in the future. Our housing plan will unlock 3.87 million new homes by cutting red tape, by reforming zoning, by lowering the costs of homebuilding and by using public lands and vacant government offices for housing. We are making it easier to save up for a tax-free down payment. We are helping end chronic homelessness and making homes more affordable. We are going to continue doing the work—

Translation: Mr. Speaker, on the contrary, this budget recognizes that our country's success depends on young people's success. That is why we are calling on the wealthy to pay a bit more tax so they can share more of the benefits with young people, to ensure that young families can pay their rent, buy a home and have better access to the care and services they need, particularly when it comes to day care and early childhood centres. We will continue to be there to support families in need by asking the wealthy to do a bit more.

Translation: Mr. Speaker, I am so proud to be a Quebecker that I know I have a place in Canada, as do all Quebeckers. We are proud to be Canadian and proud to be Quebeckers. Most of us do not feel we have to choose between the two. We can be very proud to be Quebeckers and Canadians at the same time. We will continue to be there to invest hand in hand with the Province of Quebec in order to deliver results for Quebeckers, just as we do with partners across the country. In fact, Quebec is often ahead of the curve in investing in social issues and social programs. That is why much of what we do follows Quebec's model.

The Budget

Firth states that the RCMP has reached out to GC Strategies only regarding Botler, not ArriveCAN.

Mr. Speaker, this is a budget that invests in fairness for every generation by asking the ultrawealthy to pay a little more. The Conservative Party is choosing to stand with the status quo and to stand with the ultrawealthy, instead of saying, yes, we need to invest in young people, we need to build more houses, we need to support seniors with dental care, we need to create more spaces in child care and we need to deliver hundreds of dollars a month, tax free, in the disability benefit. These are the things that we will be doing. Those are the things that they stand against.

Trudeau does not address the question, instead listing government achievements including the Canada child benefit, tax cuts for the middle class, and support for good jobs.

Source text

Mr. Speaker, Canadians can look at this government's record and know that step-by-step we have always stood up for them. We put more money in the pockets of the middle class by raising taxes on the wealthiest 1% and lowering them for the middle class. We delivered the Canada child benefit, which has made a huge difference in people's lives. We have also made sure that every step of the way we have stood up for good jobs across this country, and we will continue to. We will do so, however, always by respecting the independence of our judiciary and the institutions that protect us all in our democracy.

The Prime Minister says he is happy to offer quotes from the past two days about the budget, then reads positive reactions from ValĂ©rie Plante, Annie BĂ©rubĂ© of Équiterre, the FĂ©dĂ©ration des Canadiens noirs, and begins a Perry Bellegarde quote before being cut off.

Translation: Mr. Speaker, I would be happy to share what some people have said about our budget these past two days. Montreal Mayor ValĂ©rie Plante said that this budget shows that Ottawa wants to help municipalities move ahead with 21st-century projects that will have a significant impact. In a tweet, Annie BĂ©rubĂ© of Équiterre applauded the 2019 budget measure to make electric cars more affordable. The Federation of Black Canadians said, “It reflects the words of hundreds of Black community leaders we have met demanding action on the International Decade”. Perry Bellegarde also had things—

Carbon Pricing

Mr. Poilievre (CPC) cited a Parliamentary Budget Officer study to argue the carbon tax costs every single middle-class family more than they get back in rebates, noted the tax was increased by 23%, and asked the Prime Minister to axe the tax so that one in four hungry children can be fed. The Prime Minister did not agree to axe the tax, instead citing the Parliamentary Budget Officer to argue the Canada carbon rebate puts more money in the pockets of eight out of 10 Canadian families and accused the Conservative leader of standing with the wealthiest families.

Source text

Mr. Speaker, just this past Monday, millions of Canadians received the Canada carbon rebate in their bank accounts, which puts more money in the pockets of eight out of 10 Canadian families across the jurisdictions in which it applies, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer. That is eight out of 10 families, which are middle-class and lower-income families. However, the Leader of the Opposition chooses to stand once again with the wealthiest families, the ones with big indoor swimming pools and nine big cars. Those are the things the Conservatives are choosing to stand with because we are putting more money back in the pockets of Canadians.

Trudeau says Canada remains the best country in the world, that the government will defend Canada's borders and work with American partners, and accuses Poilievre of talking down Canada.

Source text

Mr. Speaker, despite the Leader of the Opposition trying to pretend it is not true, Canada remains the best country in the world, and the fact that we are facing significant challenges, like other places around the world, does not take away from that. We will continue to roll up our sleeves. We will continue to defend Canada's interests, defend Canada's borders and work with our partners in the United States. The Leader of the Opposition cannot help talking down Canada and Canadians. We are going to work with Canadians, with provinces, in a team Canada approach and protect Canada's structures and systems.

Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Trudeau asks the Minister of Canadian Heritage to inform the House of the government's plan to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Source text

Mr. Speaker, 31 years ago, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into being. The charter is more than part of our history; it is part of our life. It guarantees that no matter where one is from, no matter what one believes, no matter what one looks like or who one loves, Canada is a place where we can be who we are freely. Could the Minister of Canadian Heritage please inform the House of the government's plan to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms today?
